Bagels in Santiago

So far I have heard of two places to get bagels and have tried them both.  Nothing really to write home about but I'll do it anyway.

The first is at the Estadio.  There are actually two cafes (or casinos as they call them) there.  One is the big one where there are birthday parties, a lot of sandwiches with palta, hotdogs with the works, salads, and just a good place to hang out and have a coffee.  This place also is "kosher-style" in that they don't serve pork or seafood but they have meat and milk mixed all over the place.

Outside, near the pool, is a kosher cafe that serves individual pizzas, salads, and various bagel sandwiches.  You can also purchase the bagels "para llevar" which I did two weeks ago.  They were OK but I then learned of Montreal Bagels about a 10 minute drive from our apartment close to downtown.  Off I went to explore and I came back with bagels that were closer, but not quite there.  Wikipedia to the rescue (I really should follow-up on those donation pleas that keep popping up):

"In contrast to the New York-style bagel, the Montreal bagel is smaller, sweeter and denser, with a larger hole, and is always baked in a wood-fired oven. It contains malt, egg, and no salt and is boiled in honey-sweetened water before being baked in a wood-fired oven, whose irregular flames give it a dappled light-and-dark surface colour."

Spanish, Hebrew, and Russian

I just read that it is owned by a Spanish/Russian Russian/Canadian couple - that explains the Russian.

The good news is that with the huge salmon industry here there is no lack of smoked salmon.  The other good news is that "Philadelphia" or queso crema is an integral ingredient for "sushi" here so there is not lack of that either.

  2. Hi Sarah. My name is Mark and I am one of the owners of Montreal Bagel. Just to clarify - we do not use the wood-fired oven. We can not. They are banned from Santiago. We use the regular gas oven. According to our sales data - we made over 50000 bagels last year. Nothing, compare to Montreal bagel factories, but well above anyone else here. With these figures in hand we know how good our bagels are. Best regards.
